Happy Friday everyone. I’ve been asking Milk Bag moms what they hope to get for Mother’s Day this year, and most of you said you want to be sent to relax — bonus points if an appointment at Her Majesty’s Pleasure, Formula Fig or Four Seasons Spa is booked and childcare is secured — and spend quality time with your families.
I’ve included some last-minute gift suggestions at the bottom of the letter. I hope you have a great weekend and send the moms in your lives some love (and fresh flowers).
NEWS:
Former mayor Rob Ford will be the subject of a new Netflix series. The “Mayor of Mayhem” will be the focus of an episode of Trainwreck, a series that looks at “gripping, bizarre, horrifying” moments that dominated the headlines.
This article is for anyone who has questions about Labubu bag charms.
Onex is selling 25% of WestJet to three international airlines. Delta Air Lines, Korean Air Lines, and Air France are getting in on the deal, which is interesting because all three are part of the 18-member SkyTeam alliance, which rivals Star Alliance’s network (that includes Air Canada). They complete against each other for market share by coordinating schedules, sharing airport lounges, and combining frequent flyer perks. WestJet has not officially joined SkyTeam, but existing partnerships with these airlines have already expanded its global reach.
A tennis and golf collection by Roots is a few seasons too late. Brands started launching tennis- and golf-inspired collections after a wave of players came out of the pandemic, but to be fair there are still limited options available in Canada.
Hudson’s Bay’s liquidation plan includes selling make up counters for $5K.
The national unemployment rate hit 6.9% last month. In Toronto that number is sitting at 8.6%, which means that nearly 1 in 11 employable people are without a job. Last week I wrote about how those under 25 are disproportionately impacted by shaky job markets (I think it should be your moral obligation to hire an intern).
Dear Media built a podcast empire around (alternative) women’s health.
You can buy a one-carat lab-grown diamond for $900 at Pandora. When I bookmarked this link a month ago to reference for a story about falling diamond prices, the price was $2,000, which tells you everything you need to know about the market right now (lab-grown stones cost 74% less than in 2020). I’ve spoken to jewellers who seem confident that diamond engagement rings are here to stay, but when everyone is walking around with gigantic stones I just don’t know. LA-based Michelle Berlinger told me this could increase the appeal of natural stones.
Interestingly, a similar phenomenon is sweeping the world of wild-grown orchids: “Orchids, once a luxury, sell for as little as $10 in the grocery store.”
Toronto Life interviewed an adviser on Therme’s Ontario Place project.
William Nylander will outfit repeat for a fourth consecutive game tonight. Hockey players are superstitious, so the Leafs forward has been wearing the same brown suit that he wore the day he scored his first playoff goal of the year.
People are avoiding flying out of Newark airport over safety concerns. I know nobody is flying to the U.S. right now, but the Transportation Secretary said the country’s air-traffic control system needs an overhaul that will cost billions.
Newest recession indicator is homemade shampoo made from red onions.
Have we reached peak Pilates? Sweat and Tonic will open the highest-capacity Lagree studio in the world with 30 reformer machines. I would be very surprised if pilates studios continued to open at the rate they have over the last year, but we’ve reach a place where nearly all of them seem to be doing exceptionally well.
A Wicked hangover for theatres. Cineplex box office revenue is down 19%, concessions revenue is down 10%, and I think the recent ruling around deceptive pricing has turned people off from booking online, another source of revenue.
If you’re looking for a Mother’s Day gift. A Gallz Provision Mother's Day cake sampler. Anything from Health Hut’s gift guide. Sunglasses from Tusk. A funky beach tote. A new bike. A quiche from Jules Cafe. The mint green Numéro Dix from Polène won’t arrive in time but it’s perfect. A wool throw from Mjölk. Flowers from Summerhill. I also think most moms would really enjoy a 7-day Alaska cruise.
Speaking of gifts… if a paid subscription isn’t your thing, please consider sharing Milk Bag with someone who you think would enjoy it. I am shipping out a few mailers tonight for top refer-ers so you guys should get them in a few days.
