I wrote this guide during a two-week writers residency at Studio Faire. This small medieval town sits at equal distance between Toulouse and Bordeaux in Southwestern France, and is well worth a visit for those who enjoy venturing off the beaten path. Even Shakespeare is said to have spent time writing here, with the banks of the River Baïsse inspiring the setting for Love’s Labour Lost.

Where to stay

Nérac has a small selection of simple but comfortable accommodations. Most are within walking distance of the town centre, and many occupy beautifully restored buildings. During the summer months, visitors exploring the Lot-et-Garonne region pile into the area, but off-season, you’ll likely have your pick.
